  1. 1546-1601. Danish astronomer, who made
  2. accurate observations of the planets from
  3. which the German astronomer and mathematician
  4. Johann Kepler proved that planets orbit the
  5. Sun in ellipses. His discovery and report of
  6. the 1572 supernova brought him recognition,
  7. and his observations of the comet of 1577
  8. proved that it moved on an orbit among the
  9. planets, thus disproving the Greek view that
  10. comets were in the Earth's atmosphere. Brahe
  11. was a colourful figure who had to wear a
  12. metal nose after his own was cut off in a
  13. duel, and who took an interest in alchemy. In
  14. 1576 Frederick II of Denmark gave him the
  15. island of Hven, where he set up an
  16. observatory. Brahe was the greatest observer
  17. in the days before telescopes, making the
  18. most accurate measurements of the positions
  19. of stars and planets. He moved to Prague as
  20. imperial mathematician in 1599, where he was
  21. joined by Kepler, who inherited his
  22. observations when he died.
